September 16, 2020: Hosanna Prayer- Pastor Scott Thornton

This past week we sang the song “Hosanna” in our Sunday morning worship service. If you are unfamiliar with this song you could hear it here with the lyrics at...

...I have the complete song’s lyrics posted at the bottom of this devotion.

The whole song is great but the words in the bridge are especially meaningful to me. Today I would like to share with you why I find the message of the bridge so special.

Bridge

Heal my heart and make it clean

Open up my eyes to the things unseen

Show me how to love like You have loved me

Break my heart for what breaks Yours

Everything I am for Your Kingdom's cause

As I walk from earth into eternity

Heal my heart and make it clean…

This is exactly what David prayed for in Psalm 51 when he wrote…

Psalms 51:2 (NIV) "Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin."

Psalms 51:7 (NLT) "Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow."

Psalms 51:10 (NIV) "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

This is what God wants to do in the heart of every person and what the Church of the Nazarene believes and teaches about entire sanctification. Not only does God want to forgive us of our sins but God wants to make our hearts clean. God wants to fill and empower our hearts with God's Holy Spirit so that we want and will live faithful for God.

Open up my eyes to the things unseen...

In the New Testament book of Hebrews we read about Moses…

Hebrews 11:27 (NIV) "By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible."

2 Corinthians 4:18 (TEV), "We fix our attention not on the things that are seen, but on things that are unseen, because what can be seen is temporary and will last only for a short time but what cannot be seen will last forever.”

Rick Warren writes, “Everything we see is material. It will either decay, it'll rust, it'll fall apart, or it'll die. It's the things in the universe that you can't see, the immaterial, that are going to last forever. You can't see God. He's going to last forever. You can't see your soul. It's going to last forever.” And we can't see the souls of other people, but they too will last forever either in heaven or hell.

Show me how to love like You have loved me...

1 John 4:19 (NIV) "We love because he first loved us."

Jesus said,

John 15:12 (NIV) "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you."

How did God demonstrate God's love to us? It is summarized in the most known verse of the Bible...

John 3:16 (KJV) "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

...and we are commanded to love just as Jesus loved us. That means we don't live for ourselves but for God and for others. This is not natural. If you watch any child you will see how easily it is for them to be self-centered. That's why this prayer in this song is so important - that God will show us to love as God the Father and God's Son loved us.

Break my heart for what breaks Yours...

One of the most favorite verses for children (and adults) to memorize is:

John 11:35 (NIV) "Jesus wept."

...but did you know that there is another verse in the Bible where we see Jesus crying?

Luke 19:41-42 (NIV) "As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it [42] and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes."

Jesus' heart broke not only for the death of his friend Lazaus but also for the pending spiritual death of people - even His enemies.

Here's the question - "Does your heart break for those who don't know Jesus? If not, make these lyrics your prayer!

Everything I am for Your Kingdom's cause...

Jesus’ disciple, Peter, told Him,

Mark 10:28-30 (NIV) "Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!"

Jesus said,

Luke 14:33 (NIV) "In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple."

Matthew 6:33 (NIV) "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Are you totally surrendered to God and God’s purpose? Do you see why this song means so much to me? It is a prayer, it is a cry. I fall so short and this song’s bridge summaries so well my heart’s cry.

What is the benefit of following Jesus completely? You’ll find the multiple promises in Jesus’ response to Peter:

Mark 10:28-30 (NIV) Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!" [29] "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel [30] will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields--and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life."

As I walk from earth into eternity...

This life as we know it is not heaven. Death for the believer is simply a walk from this temporal existence into that which will never end.

Jesus said,

John 11:25-26 (NIV) Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; [26] and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

Let the bridge of this song, Hosanna, be your prayer. Let us all totally live for Jesus in the light of eternity!

Hosanna

Verse 1

I see the King of glory

Coming on the clouds with fire

The whole earth shakes

The whole earth shakes yeah

Verse 2

I see His love and mercy

Washing over all our sin

The people sing

The people sing

Chorus

Hosanna hosanna

Hosanna in the highest

Hosanna hosanna

Hosanna in the highest

Verse 3

I see a generation

Rising up to take their place

With selfless faith

With selfless faith

Verse 4

I see a near revival

Stirring as we pray and seek

We're on our knees

We're on our knees

Bridge

Heal my heart and make it clean

Open up my eyes to the things unseen

Show me how to love like You have loved me

Break my heart for what breaks Yours

Everything I am for Your Kingdom's cause

As I walk from earth into eternity

Chorus

Hosanna hosanna

Hosanna in the highest

Hosanna hosanna

Hosanna in the highest
