“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” Psalm 37:23 (NLT)
The Bible tells us that “The Lord directs the steps of the godly.” Isn’t that an amazing thought? The God of the universe, the creator of everything we see and touch, directs our steps! And besides that, He also “delights in every detail of their lives.” We are always on God’s mind!
The other day it occurred to me (from listening to a podcast from Dr. Henry Cloud) that this implies that in order for Him to direct our steps we have to be taking steps. I don’t know why that never occurred to me. Did it ever occur to you?
How many people do we all know that want God to be directing them, but they are just sitting still while they wait? Is that you? We all know that God has a plan for our lives and want that plan to be happening right now. However, we have to take steps to get there and not bypass any lessons we need to learn first.
When children learn to walk, they don’t just sit on the floor and start moving. No, they have been moving by pulling themselves up on the edges of furniture to support themselves and then they decide to take a step. Mom and dad see that their baby wants to start walking and they position themselves a few steps away from each other. One parent holds the little tykes’ hands, points the child’s feet toward the other parent and eventually let go just enough that the baby can take a few steps. This parent directed the child’s first steps. Then the child gets stronger and more stable and continues to taking longer and more frequent steps.
This is the same way with us. We need to first take steps and then God’s plan can be revealed, often times one step at a time.
What is your next step?
Could it be accepting the forgiveness that Christ freely offers to you?
Could it be publicly acknowledging your relationship with Christ and forgiveness of sin through baptism?
Could it be taking CLASS 101 and becoming a member of the church?
Could it be any of the other CLASSes that are offered to help you become more like Christ?
Is it finally joining that Small Group you’ve been thinking about?
Could it be admitting that God has called you to full-time ministry and starting your education?
Could it be writing that devotional that you’ve been asked to write?
Could it be forgiving someone or asking for forgiveness?
Could it be seeking professional help for a relationship or problem you are facing?
Whatever it is, please don’t put it off any longer. There are many steps that can be taken and I can bet that you already know what step is next for you. I encourage you to pull yourself up and take that first step so God can direct your following steps! You won’t regret it!
