Psalm 23:5a “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”
In some of the finest sheep country of the world, the high plateaus of the sheep ranges are referred to as “mesas” - the Spanish word for tables.
So it may be that what David referred to as a table was the entire high summer range. Though these mesas may be remote and hard to reach, the sheep owner takes the time and trouble to get them ready for his flocks.
Early in the season the shepherd will go and prepare the land. He will make sure there will be plenty to eat and that none of the plants on the land are poisonous or hurtful for his flocks to eat. He will make sure there will be the needed water and determine what is needed to keep his flock safe from any kind of harm.
Like sheep, and especially lambs, we somehow feel that we have to try everything that comes our way. We have to taste things and try things that we know are dangerous. Somehow even knowing something or someone is bad for us, we ignore it and decide to give it a try. Because the shepherd has gone ahead and prepared the mesa – the table; he has a plan of how to protect his flocks.
Our Savior is the same way. He knows every scam, every trick, every deceitfulness of our enemy Satan. But our Savior is wise and we need to stay close to Jesus. In fact, at all times we would be wise to walk closer to Jesus.
When we get into trouble, Jesus is there. He wants us to live in peace and trust that He is there with us at all times. He can protect us. Read the Bible each day. Spend time talking to Him. Give Him opportunity to talk to you by reading the Bible and praying.
Heavenly Father, Thank you for always being with me. Thank you for caring about me. Thank you for always wanting the best for me. Help me to make the right choices. I trust you God.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
