I have always admired the fancy hats worn by women in the 50’s. If I had been an adult woman in the 50’s I am sure I would have had quite the hat collection!!! But there is a head covering more important than a 50’s that I want as my main attire, the Crown of Glory. As I thought about this, I came up with an acrostic to help me keep my focus on that goal.
CIRCUMSTANCES: Stuff happens beyond our control: COVID19, job loss, kids, finances, aging, health, faltering relationships. Everyday we face many circumstances in which we have no control. But the exciting thing is, we don’t have to let those circumstances control us. We can choose our response to them. “The Lord is my light and my salvation, who shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1
REAL: One of my favorite children’s books is The Velveteen Rabbit. Here is how the Skin Horse describes real. “Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.' Because we are loved by God...really, really loved by Him...we are real. It doesn’t matter how we look, what we have, or don’t have, we can experience God’s unconditional love! “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.” John 15:9
OVERCOMERS: My family members are big Rocky fans. We even have a granddog named Rocky. I think the reason we like these movies so much is that Rocky has to overcome many obstacles to become the champion fighter he aspires to be. As Christians, we have many obstacles in our path….but with God’s power we too can be overcomers. “...for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” 1 John 5:4
WISDOM: I recently read a quote, “He who devotes sixteen hours a day to hard study may become at sixty as wise as he thought himself at twenty.” This reminded me of another quote, “Hire a teenager while they still know everything.” Although I find these quotes funny, and somewhat true, I am reminded that true wisdom comes from God...being in his Word, spending time with godly people and gleaning from their wisdom. Proverbs 9:10 is an invitation to wisdom. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
NEVER OVER: In college I ran track. I can’t say I ever won a race. There were races when the other team was cheering me on just to finish. (Does that tell you something!) The word “grit” comes to mind. “It is the ability to persist in something you feel passionate about and persevere when you face obstacles. This kind of passion is not about intense emotions or infatuation. It’s about having direction and commitment. When you have this kind of passion, you can stay committed to a task that may be difficult or boring.” In our Christian walk we must have “grit.” We must “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1 And “hold on to what you have so that no one will take your crown.” Rev. 3:11
In all of our CIRCUMSTANCES, we can trust that God loves us for who we REALLY are. Through His strength we can OVERCOME the obstacles that are in our path today. Let’s seek God’s WISDOM and remember the race is NEVER OVER until we receive the CROWN of Glory.
