Online we can find quizzes such as which princess or celebrity do you most resemble. I am going to endeavor to ask you to think about which character of the Bible are you most like. That is, to read about them in the Bible and ask God to search your heart to see if there is anything in you similar to the Biblical person.
Jonah. Read Jonah chapters 1-4 to refresh yourself with Jonah’s story.
We learn about Jonah as he is asked by God to visit “the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” Jonah 1:2.
Jonah’s reaction is to run away from God, but even in his running Jonah describes himself as “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and dry land.” Jonah 1:9
He was swallowed by a big fish and then after a prayer of repentance while in the big fish he was returned to dry land. “When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ’Salvation comes from the LORD’”. Jonah 2:7-9
Jonah made good by going to Ninevah as God desired and the city repented. The Lord saw this and saved Ninevah.
But, Jonah was angry. Chapter 4 talks of Jonah’s anger.
Have you ever been used by God in a way you never thought you would be?
Have you ever been angry that a person or people group was saved despite all the evil, death or destruction they caused during their lifetime?
Have you ever gone in the opposite direction, knowing something was wrong, feeling that nervousness in your soul, but doing it anyway? Perhaps you did not know God as well as you do now so you did not believe He could see everything you do, surely he would not see this sinful act?
Good News! God loves you! You can repent (say your sorry and head in HIS direction).
Don’t wait to get swallowed up by a big fish to make a change. :)
