Psalm 23:6b “and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Psalm 23 opened with the proud, joyous statement, “The Lord is my Shepherd.”
Now it closes with the equally positive statement. “And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Here is a sheep that is completely satisfied with its life, fully contented with the care it receives, so much at home with the shepherd that there is not a shred of desire for change.
The shepherd has developed a great affection and devotion to his flock. He would never think of parting with his sheep. Healthy, contented, productive sheep are his delight and profit. So strong now are the cords between them that in truth are forever.
The word “house” here in the poem has a wider meaning than most people attach to it. Normally when we speak of the house of the Lord, we think of a sanctuary, church building, or meeting place of God’s people. David may have had this in mind. It is pleasant to think that one would want to be in the Lord’s house. However, what is referred to by “house” is the family or household or flock of the good shepherd. The sheep are so happy with the flock they belong to, with the ownership of that flock, that they have no desire for anything to change.
We as Christians should be more like this. We should be proud to belong to Jesus. We should be proud to tell others of who our Shepherd is. How glad we should be to look back and recall all the amazing ways in which He has provided for our life. We should be
excited and eager to tell others of whom we belong to, Jesus.
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me." John 10:11 & 14
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” Luke 12:32
I am excited and happy to say, “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
What about you?
Thank you for being my Good Shepherd! Thank you for caring about my life and taking good care of me. Thank you for sending Jesus. Thank you for forgiving my sin. Thank you for loving me that much! Help me to tell others about you! As a believer and follower of Jesus, I am excited to say that “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”.
In Jesus name, Amen.
