June 2, 2020 Joseph - Laura Harris

Online we can find quizzes like which princess or celebrity do you most resemble. I ask you to think about which character of the Bible you are most like: to read about them in the Bible and ask God to search your heart to see if there is anything in you similar to the Biblical person.

Today’s scripture comes from the book of Genesis 37,39-43. You may want to refresh yourself with Joseph's story.

We are told of Joseph's birth to Jacob and Rachel in Gen 30:35. However, Joseph's story really begins in Chapter 37.

Joseph was a favorite of Jacob/Israel’s, as he was favored for being born in Jacob’s old age by Rachel (Jacob’s favorite wife). Joseph was given an ornate robe (we often call it a coat of many colors.)

Joseph was a dreamer and shared his prophetic dreams with the family. “…my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.” (Gen 37:7) I imagine the brother’s may have thought Joseph an upstart-bragging, and a bit tired of the favoritism from their father. We don’t have to imagine long though, because the brothers sell Joseph into slavery and used Joseph’s robe to prove a lie (Joseph’s death).

Joseph found favor with Potiphar (officer of Pharaoh’s), but unfortunately Potiphar’s wife had eyes for Joseph and when he would not bed down with her, she accused Joseph of rape- leading to Joseph being imprisoned.

Jacob, Potiphar, Pharaoh and the warden all found favor with Joseph. God gave Joseph favor by making everything he did a success while in prison.

By Joseph being able to interpret Pharaoh’s dream and Pharaoh placing Joseph in charge of the land of Egypt . Joseph was able to prepare Egypt for the upcoming famine. After 2 trips by the brothers, the family was reunited in Egypt and famine did not consume Joseph’s family.

Right now many of us are called to work from home or shelter at home. This is a minor inconvenience compared to what Joseph endured. I understand that for some it is a major challenge, because they are first responders/essential employees or there may be abuse at home due to the current pressures.

Do you see any of Joseph’s challenges in your life? Are you distant from your family? Have you been forgotten?

Have you received something only to have it taken away from you because of jealousy or because you won’t change your principles?

Have you been wrongly imprisoned, accused perhaps by someone very dear to you?

Remember God is always with you (if you believe in Him). Remember God will provide. Just as with Joseph, God makes great things from what looks to us as yuck or muck.

If you have strayed away come back He is willing and able to restore the relationship!~. :)
