Psalm 23:6a “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life.”
Throughout the study of Psalm 23, we see how attentive the shepherd is to give his sheep the best care. All the sheep benefit because of his effort, his labor and his love for his sheep. The shepherd never gets lazy but continues to offer the best.
David now sums it up with this statement, “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life”.
The sheep with such a shepherd know that they have a privileged position with their shepherd. No matter what happens in life, the sheep can be perfectly sure that goodness and love will be in the picture. We can be perfectly sure that goodness and love is what our Good Shepherd has planned for our life. We have a sound, sympathetic, intelligent owner. We do not need to worry, for goodness and mercy is the treatment we will receive from the master’s expert loving hands.
Not only for David was this a bold statement, but it was an exclamation of clear confidence in the who controls his career and destiny.
The Shepherd looks on our life with tenderness, for He loves us deeply. He sees the years of our life during which His goodness and love followed us without slacking. He longs to see that goodness and love not only passed on to others but passed back to Him with joy. He longs for us to love Him and we should, because He first loved us.
Then our Shepherd is satisfied.
Father, Thank you for being my Good Shepherd and leading me in the right direction. Help me to show goodness and love to others and more importantly to you!
In Jesus Name, Amen
