Lectionary Passage: Psalm 114; Jonah 2:1-10; Matthew 12:38-42
“Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.” Matthew 12:38-42 (NIV)
Today’s gospel reading is Matthew 12:38-42. Here we see those who opposed Jesus were asking for a “miraculous sign”. This is not to be confused with a miracle, because they had seen plenty of miracles by Jesus. These Pharisees and teachers of the law believed that Jesus did miracles through satanic power. This is why Jesus told them in the passage directly above that speaking against the Holy Spirit, by which Jesus did the miracles, was the unforgivable sin. The “miraculous sign” they wanted was something on demand, some Biblical scholars believe in the sky, that would confirm prophecy and prove Jesus’ authority. Jesus told them that the only sign would be the prophet Jonah: “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 12:40 (NIV)
What else does God have to do for you to believe in Jesus? What else does God have to prove for you to totally trust in Christ? Oh yes, God can work in many other ways to reveal God’s self to you (Romans 1:20), but nothing will ever be as great as the good news of the gospel, that Jesus died for your sins and rose again and you can have an eternal relationship with Jesus. No one else in history has come back from the dead to live forever except Jesus. If Jesus did that with His life just think what He can do with yours if you would simply surrender and completely trust HIm!
“I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 1:19-20 (NLT)
